Waspland Whisperings
Before we deal with the on going issue of the continuity of speedway here at Queensway Meadows it is only right that we congratulate Craig Watson on achieving 2000 official points as a Newport Wasp. The magic moment coming in heat eight of last Sunday's match against Workington. Considering that Wato missed the main part of three seasons because of injury that is quite a feat and last week he also gave a display that gave us a little pride on another difficult afternoon. He first came here in 1997 and made an immediate impact and his influence remains all these years later.
Last week I penned an editorial pointing out that our income does not meet our expenditure. As a family we had to be honest about that fact even though it can lend to sensational headlines and all sorts of rumours. The key is that any business has to try to at least balance its budget and preferably to be on the correct side of the balance sheet.
In Speedway there are a limited number of income streams but many more expenses. Turnstile receipts are the obvious key factors and a hard core of 300 is way below the break even figure for Premier League racing. So tough decisions are likely to have to be made but in the final analysis we will inform you officially of what is happening through our PRO and on one else. Horse's mouth as it was.
One comfort is that while the Wasps are still tolling away for a result at the time of writing in mid week although we have two away fixtures after the programme is printed the Hornets are proving to be a major force in the National League but again we need a reasonable level of support for those fixtures too.
Today we meet a Berwick side whom we defeated a few weeks ago in the second leg of the KO Cup. A repeat today is on the cards. So on with the racing!
