Waspland Whisperings
What happened to the British Summer? Three consecutive rain offs for the Wasps with the two home meetings against Rye House then Glasgow followed by Stoke away. However, we have moved quickly to rearrange dates with Glasgow here next Saturday evening September 4th at 7pm and the Rye House Rockets at Queensway Meadows on Sunday September 12th at 2.30pm. One further change is that we will not be staging the National Trophy match against Plymouth on Saturday September 11th but will endeavour to keep you updated on the new date via the website, PA and local media outlets. We also have away fixtures for the Wasps at Stoke and Kings Lynn to be confirmed but again as soon as those are fixed we will inform you by the various outlets.
That's looking forward but for many of those who followed the sport at Somerton Park from the 1960's we were saddened to hear of the sudden death of Toby Harrysson at the age of 67. The pocked sized Swede became a Newport Wasp in 1967 and was simply one of the most spectacular racers the world had ever seen. He was a world class performer too and one wonders what his career could have been if he had not suffered serious leg injuries at the 1969 World Final which effectively brought his racing days to a premature end. We were able to pay Toby the tribute of a minute's silence at last Sunday's parade and pleased to pay further tribute in t he programme today.
This afternoon we play host to a well balanced Sheffield side who should give the Wasps a good battle for points. The boys were going places before the rain intervened and will be keen to regain that momentum. So, on with the racing!
