Meeting 1: Newport Wasps v 1999 Legends
Sunday 21st March, 2010 @ 2.30pm
Referee: Mick Posselwhite (Eynsham, Oxon)
Track Record 57.75 Andrew Tully 12/07/09

Programme notes
Hello and welcome to the 2010 season which sees some familiar faces back on track not only for today's special occasion but for the season as a whole.  First with respect to our Premier League campaign we welcome Kyle Legault and Anders Mellgren as the brand new names in a Newport Wasps race jacket.  Anders is joined by Kim Nilsson, Todd Kurtz and Grant Tregoning in enjoying their first full seasons at this level in British Speedway although Grant is not with us today because of a delay with his visa.  Kim was a winner from the off when he appeared for the Wasps at the tail end of the previous campaign while Todd and Grant showed us what they were capable of when they rode for the Hornets.  At the senior end of the team Leigh Lanham is with us from the off with his coming back as number one and captain while Craig Watson needs no introduction and we are delighted to see him back in action after a season out.

Of course for this afternoon's nostalgic fixture against the 1999 legends - Wato changes side for one week to lead a selection of ex Wasps who gave us the best season so far since the re-launch of speedway in the city in 1997.  Whilst we are disappointed that Emil Lindqvist cannot ride because he has not recovered from a shoulder operation - we thank him for his attendance today along with Bobby Eldridge.  You can catch up with them after the meeting in the Wasps Nest and we have provided a special section in today's programme for you to collect autographs of your former favourites.  Sadly Anders Henriksson cannot be with us today because of work commitments but has promised to visit us in the summer.

One rider who is sure to be the centre of attention is Frank Smart.  Smartie is a larger than life character and is on a flying visit from his base in Western Australia.  He lived in Newport during his time as a Wasp and married a local lass.  We look forward to seeing him on our track for one last time.  Frank still races back home and with the exception of Scott Pegler all the other Legends are also still riding in some way.  Chris Neath of course is now the captain of Rye House Rockets, Andrew Appleton is one of the world's top Long track and Grass track exponents.  Tony Atkin is still on board here as captain of the Newport Hornets National League team.  So good old Scott has had to put in some extra work to get himself ready and we commend him on that.

A time of happy memories and catching up today but once the dust has settled then the 2010 Wasps get prepared for an away match at Somerset next Friday and the second leg of that Severn Bridge trophy encounter here next Sunday afternoon.  We are determined that our second season in  charge will see improvements and the acquisition of a new team sponsor in the form of Darlows the estate agent chain for instance takes us in a new and positive direction.

Meanwhile enjoy today both during and after the meeting.  So - on with the racing! Steve
