I had to rewrite this editorial as I felt I could not begin without expressing our sadness at the loss of Emil Kramer. He was a good friend to Nick and myself and a speedway rider who had not forgotten his roots. He was on the telephone to Nick the day before his death offering to ride in this meeting if we did not have enough riders. I am sure he will be sadly missed by all t hat had the pleasure of knowing him. We will be holding a minutes silence today in respect.

Anyway a happy new year to everyone and thank you all for coming. The New Year Classic has returned to where we feel it belongs. Had it not been for Tim Stone's untimely death no one would have questioned this event being run out Newport. It seems now that we will have to fight for this meeting next year, as many clubs now wish to run this event and today I hope that we will succeed in running a meeting that satisfies everyone. We have tried to give you an interesting field, with the young Hungarian rider and three young Swedes, all trying to impress and maybe get a team place in British Speedway in the future. They are joined by some familiar faces and I hope you appreciate the commitment of all the riders today. On with the racing. Steve
